weekend in Pittsburgh
Jun. 24th, 2008 08:32 amWe spent the past weekend in Pittsburgh, visiting my sister and her boyfriend J. I had never been to Pittsburgh before and my mental image was of a gray, industrial place; I was surprised by how lovely it turned out to be. Three rivers intersect in the downtown area and it's spectacular to look at, all bridges and water and tall, gleaming buildings. Pittsburgh also surprised me with hills, which would suddenly pitch the car up or down at steep angles. J's family is from Pittsburgh and he made a great tour guide, sharing historical facts and stories as we drove around the city.
J's place is wonderful, an airy two-bedroom condo with lots of natural light, within walking distance of stores and little restaurants. We went to PNC Park on Saturday for a Pirates game and enjoyed Primanti Brothers sandwiches, which are essentially normal sandwiches with the addition of a generous helping of slaw and french fries sandwiched between the slices of bread. PNC Park takes full advantage of its location, opening out towards downtown, so that the fans can watch the city light up as night falls. My sister prudently got us seats underneath the canopy, so we didn't get soaked when the rain started coming down.
We also got to meet my Uncle T. He's actually the grandson of my great-grandfather's second wife, back when it was okay for Chinese men to have multiple wives. It was interesting to catch glimpses of my grandfather in Uncle T's profile, hints of the great-grandfather I never knew.
The weather was gorgeous for Sunday, bright and clear. We played with their adorable puggles, went out for dim sum, and took a walk around the Pitt campus. It's a manageable drive, only four or five hours; I definitely want to visit again, explore the city a little more. We'll just make sure not to hit rush hour in Frederick next time.
