dragonboat

I will be paddling in the DC Dragonboat Festival this weekend (rain or shine, unless there's lightning). Visit the website for details.

My sister and I will be in the East Rising team, which will be racing at 11:20am Saturday and 8:12am Sunday; further race times are dependent on how well we do in the initial heats. Those who do not have other plans for Memorial Day weekend are welcome to come cheer us on and/or wait in breathless excitement for someone to fall into the Potomac.

Wow. I didn't know we had a Dragonboat Festival here. Very cool -- good luck!

This is the first time I'm involved in it, but my sister tells me it's an annual thing, every Memorial Day. She's been drummer for the team for at least three years now.

There's food and vendors of Chinese kitsch too, as I recall. And possibly a lion dance.

I'm so glad you could do it this year! I'm excited. I took a cab home from work yesterday around 2 am when I finally left DC (got an interesting lecture about lifestyle and career choices from the cabdriver in very broken English most of the way home) and we drove past the Kennedy center and over the Potomac - and I looked down at the river and just had a good vibe about our team this year - pictured us sailing through the finish ahead like last year's come-from-behind (in the good way, of course) second round win.

ROARRRR! Let's do this!!

and oh yeah

I guess it's a little late now to say good luck, so I hope it went well. I'm currently between my two yearly boating (& boat building) challenges. For the cardboard boat race a couple weeks ago I had yet another award-winning design. (Yes, I mean the Titanic Award.) And it's just two weeks until the Quick & Dirty Boat Building Competition at HarborFest. My new race partner and I spent the weekend building a prototype. While that is rather contrary to the Quick & Dirty spirit, it's a crazy enough design that we really had to do it to build up some confidence we wouldn't be taking a swim in the Elizabeth River on race day.

A most happy
