While we were driving down some highway in North Yorkshire, I kept making fun of the signs. "Hey look," I'd say, "that exit goes to some town named Glasshouses. I guess they don't throw stones." Another favorite: Blubberhouses.
Apparently I missed some even more hilarious place names in England. As for Penistone, a thriving South Yorkshire town, just stop that sophomoric snickering. "It's pronounced 'PENNIS-tun,'" Fiona Moran, manager of the Old Vicarage Hotel in Penistone, said over the telephone, rather sharply.
Thanks to Scalzi for the Friday morning giggles.
