someday, I'll grow my own food

...but first I'll need to get over my fear of bugs.
The TiVo captured Jamie Oliver's new show, "Jamie at Home." Jamie's not on my a-list of celebrity chefs but I'm fond of him; he's fun to listen to, and this new show (tagline is "from the garden to the kitchen" or some such) is supposed to illustrate what he does with things from his garden -- which means that he'll be cooking stuff that's in season, a recent fad of mine. (Prompted by Michael Pollan.)
The pumpkin/squash episode was going all right until Jamie came up out of nowhere with a plump, yellow lemon for zest and juice. I'm not an expert, but lemons (not that you can grow them around here anyway) don't tend to be available at the same time as the squashes. But that's just a little quibble. The squash muffins looked quick and easy, and I'll probably be making them sometime soon. Next time butternut squashes are on sale at the Safeway.
I miss the farmer's market; back in the day I'd just drop by and pick out whatever caught my eye, and figure out what to do with it later (or just ask the farmer for suggestions). I think the market starts back up in May... Meanwhile, I've still got some apples left in the fridge. One of the farmer's market ladies suggested slicing them thin and sautéing with some butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. I may try that sometime this week; it sounds like a perfect cold-weather treat.
