of books as food

Getting to work about 3 hours earlier did not make me any more productive; since we completely lack natural light in here, the only difference I noticed was that it was pretty quiet for the first part of the morning. Also, my stomach started growling for lunch at about 10am.
On the other hand, I'm really looking forward to going home in about 1.5 hours. I think I'll make a trip to the library. I've been on a binge of
hakainokami's Terry Pratchett books lately*, and although Pratchett is always satisfying, reading him is kind of like eating candy**. I'd like to try to fit in something a bit more substantial before school starts in a week. This excerpt of Rushdie's Shalimar the Clown looks appetizing, the last two paragraphs in particular.
Every time I'm at the library it feels like a buffet. Look at all the goodies, there'll never be room for them all, that sort of thing. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they stock this month's
peril_book_club book; I'll have to wait on Amazon.
* The other books on my currently-reading plate are either nonfiction or House of Leaves (which is much creepier than I had anticipated). They're all good so far, but I'm not craving any of them at the moment.
** Yes, Pratchett is candy, easy and quick to consume. But it's really good candy though -- exotic Pocky, say, or good dark chocolate, satisfying in ways both expected and surprising. Some other authors (Tanya Huff, just for instance) are total junk food, and I read them anyway. Everyone needs a little junk food.
